Referees have one of the most challenging and rewarding roles on the pitch. If you’re up for the challenge, the information below can help you get started.

We’re always on the lookout for adult referees to join the SYSA referee ranks as well as youth referees to join the Shorelake Junior Referee program. More information on becoming a referee is below.

SYSA League Referees

Referees for our SYSA league matches are certified through the US Soccer refereeing program. If you are interested in refereeing, you can find information at the following sites:

Shorelake Junior Referee Program

Our Junior Referees are assigned to our Shorelake League matches at the Cedarbrook and Ridgecrest fields. Participating in this program is an opportunity for older players (ages 10-13) start their refereeing career and learn more about the game, develop leadership skills, and earn some money along the way.

In alignment with Washington Youth Soccer, our club’s goal of this program is integrate referee development alongside player development. The program provides a systemic progression of officiating that builds character and knowledge for the participants. It also helps create a corps of qualified referees, enabling others to enjoy the game.

Program Details

Junior Referees are assigned matches based on their age and experience. The referee development program focuses on the role of the referee, safety of the players, and the progression of play. Laws of the game emphasized throughout the season include the following:

  • Start and restart of play

  • Ball in or out of play

  • Correct goal scored determination

  • Proper throw-ins

  • Goal kicks

  • Use of whistle

  • Fouls & misconduct

  • Free kicks

  • Substitution management

During each match officiated they will be evaluated and mentored by a senior advisor offering instruction for improvement and accuracy in their play calling abilities. The Dept of Labor & Industries considers referees under the age of 14 to be volunteers and they will receive a stipend at the conclusion of the season for each game they officiate.

Qualified candidates for the program between the ages of 10-12 will meet the qualifications below:

  • Basic level of soccer understanding

  • Available to officiate Saturday mornings

  • Participate in classroom & field session training prior to season

  • Communication skills with a desire to lead and provide direction
